Barcelona's Most Popular Attractions

Monday, 09 April 2012

Barcelona has proved to be Spain’s most popular tourist attraction since the late 19th century, thanks to its groundbreaking architecture, climate and the trappings of the cosmopolitan city.  If you are lucky enough to be invited on business or are planning a vacation to visit this city, there are plenty of tourist attractions on offer either at conference venues in Barcelona, parks or visiting the world renowned architecture.  There are however, some tourist attractions that perhaps don’t attract the same level of press attention but are absolutely worth a mention. The calendar in Barcelona is littered with different types of festivals, some for local celebrations, and some focused on music and attracting like-minded people from across the globe.  Here is an overview of what the annual festival calendar looks like in Barcelona:

Epiphany (5th/ 6th January)

This is the day that Spaniards exchange gifts, much like we do on Christmas day.  It is actually to mark the arrival of the three wise men (in the bible).  There is some theatre on the streets of Barcelona to mark the event on the eve of Epiphany i.e. the 5th January.

Carnival (February/ March)

Like most carnivals you can expect to see plenty of vibrant floats, fancy dress, fireworks and parades through the streets.  It is the last chance for locals to let their hair down before lent.

Dia de Sant Jordi (23rd April)

This is a celebration of Saint George who was patron saint of Catalonia.  The entire length of Las Ramblas is turned into a flower stall, making for a flamboyant view of the city.

Sonar Festival (June)

This is one of the world’s leading experimental electronic music festivals.  It spans an entire week and conference venues in Barcelona, clubs, cafes and beaches all mark the occasion by throwing debauched parties.

Grec Festical

For the slightly more discerning festivalgoer, this festival attracts a different type of customer.  Theatre, dance and music acts are performed at sensational venues around the city.

Sant Juan (23rd/ 24th June)

Mainly hosted on the coast, this festival is a celebration of the mid-summer.  It is a huge party with food, fireworks and dancing.

Grec Festival De Barcelona (Approx 15th August)

This is a festival to celebrate all the arts, theatre, dance, music etc that is rated one of Barcelona’s best celebrations.  It lasts for three months and is held all over the city.

Benicassim International Festival (July)

This is one of Spain’s most famous festivals attracting more commercial music acts such as Arctic Monkeys and Arman Van Helden.  Visitors from around the globe camp throughout this festival at a port town just outside of Barcelona and Valencia.

La Tomatina (last weds of August)

This is the day, which hosts the infamous annual tomato fight.

Festa De La Merce (24th September)

This is Barcelona’s largest local festival.  It brings together all manner of festivities including music, fireworks, processions etc.  Plenty of Cava is consumed as this is the national drink of Catalonia.

In conclusion, whatever time of year you are visiting Barcelona and whatever your motivation is for the visit, there are so many vibrant and energetic festivals that are well worth a visit.  There is plenty of activity available be it in conference venues in Barcelona, music venues, beaches, bars or simply the streets of the city itself.  Make sure that you don’t waste an opportunity to be part of these animated and wonderful celebrations.
