5 Historical Must See Cities

Tuesday, 07 August 2012

Some of our world's greatest blessings derive from long-gone civilisations and ancient societies. All throughout the world, evidences of those that lived before us are apparent in the form of historical architecture, ancient treasures and cities ruined by the hand of time. Here are the five historical must see cities; the places we ought to visit to understand the record of humankind.

The Dead Cities of Syria

Now is perhaps not the best of times to be visiting Syria, and that is a real shame. The country hosts what are regarded as the Dead Cities; some 700 Byzantine towns, villages and monastic settlements, which are the pinnacle of what is left of the Byzantine world and a historians dream.

They date from the first to seventh centuries and are located between Aleppo and Idlib. This historian's goldmine covers a distance of 20-40km in area. Visit the Kalota Castle and churches, located 20km northwest of Aleppo; or Kharab Shams Basilica, one of the oldest best preserved Christian structures.

Malta

A cheaper holiday destination than the aforementioned, Malta is steeped in ancient ruins and historical must sees. Now of course, Malta isn't a city, but its small size justified its inclusion here.

One travelling to Malta can find the oldest free-standing structures on Earth, with the Megalithic Temples of Malta which date between 5000BC and 700BC.

The large Tarxien temple complex is a delightful sight to behold for travellers; as is the Skorba temples and the Ta Hagrat temples in Mgarr. There is literally so much to see in Malta you may find yourself having to extend your stay, in spite of the country's small size.

Yucatan

The state of Yucatan is based in Mexico and homes cities that once belonged to one of the most mysterious and infamous ancient civilisations: the Mayans. Just yesterday in fact the tomb of a 1,300 year old Mayan prince was found in what was then called Uxul and is now Yucatan. This city, embedded with ancient palaces, buildings and ruins that speak a thousand words, is an absolute must see for travellers with a historical zeal.

Enjoy the Coba pyramid and climb to the top for an exhilarating experience. Tulum by the ocean is another fascinating lost city that will enthral visitors. Yucatan is a place any travel advisor will highly recommend to those with a love for ancient history.
